English and Writing The Empowering Writers program is a school-wide endeavor that teaches students how to examine the elements of narrative, expository, and opinion or argument texts in order to be able to write effectively. The students will benefit from teacher modeling, skills-based small group instruction, flexible groupings, and a Writer's Workshop model that includes regular teacher conferencing. Grammar instruction is tied to the writing curriculum and worksheets are used for practice as needed. Students are expected to use grade appropriate grammar and conventional language mechanics in all their assignments. Grading Rubrics are used for projects and writing assignments. A point system is used and grading categories include Tests/Quizzes, Classwork & Participation, Projects, and Homework. Please review the Student Handbook regarding policies for makeup work due to illness or absence. Google Classroom Assignments are posted in Google Classroom and organized by weeks of the school year (for example, Week 2: Sept.21-25). In addition, class notes, examples, and templates are posted as “Materials” for reference under the “Topics” heading labeled “Reading Resources” or “Writing Resources”. Please be aware that this Google account is to be used for school assignments only and is not designed for students as a social media outlet. Violation of this policy will result in the termination of a student’s account, and this policy is in keeping with the school policies outlined in the Student Handbook.
I look forward to working together to make this a successful year for your child! Please do not hesitate to contact me via email at any point throughout the year with questions or concerns. Warm regards, Mrs. Helen Collins helen.collins@stmarysparish.org
